Localising global challenges

Climate change and energy transition

In the fight to mitigate global warming and adapt to climate change, European cities are leading the way: 64% of Eurocities members have already committed to becoming climate neutral by 2050. Nearly 90% have also adopted a climate adaptation strategy to adjust to the impact of climate change and protect their citizens.

Cities are an integral part of the solution: the main challenges come together in cities, but it is also in cities where a wealth of expertise and experience can be found to come up with the right solutions.  As the facilitators for local stakeholders and citizens, their leading role and the tools they have to ensure a broad societal engagement in the transition towards a climate-neutral society are essential.

Getting there requires strong collaboration across different levels of government, especially in key areas like transport, renewable energy, and in carrying out a necessary building renovation wave.

Our European projects in this area include Covenant of Mayors.
