People make cities. And people are Europe’s greatest economic asset. Cities provide Europe’s citizens with the space and the means to live, work and play.
Large numbers of people come to Europe’s cities to work and live. With so many people living and working in our cities, inequalities arise between different areas, in terms of physical infrastructure or quality of life, in health, education and employment to name a few.
Cities work hard to resolve these differences through regeneration and social inclusion programmes or projects. Investments in skills, jobs and social inclusion provide clear payback, and directly improve the quality of life for our citizens, 75% of whom live in cities.
Our social affairs work is in part supported through funding we receive from the European Commission's DG Employment PROGRESS programme. This allows us carry out research, peer reviews and studies within our forum and working groups.
Supported by the European Commission, the nine cities involved in our Cities for Active Inclusion network work together to chart the opportunities and challenges to economic and social inclusion in different member states. National workshops and comparative research has focused on such issues as housing, employment and young people.
Our EU-funded ImpleMentoring project promotes the implementation of our Integrating Cities Charter, in which signatory cities commit to provide equal opportunities for all residents and promote the integration of migrants.
