People make cities. And people are Europe’s greatest economic asset. Cities provide Europe’s citizens with the space and the means to live, work and play.

Many people come to Europe’s cities for work. With the sheer numbers of people that live and work in our cities, differences arise between areas, such as in the physical infrastructure or the quality of life, for example in health, education and employment. Cities actively work hard to reduce these differences through regeneration and social inclusion programmes or projects. Investments in skills, jobs and social inclusion provide a clear payback, as well as directly improving the quality of life for our citizens, 75% of whom live in cities.
EUROCITIES social affairs work is in part supported through funding we receive from the European Commission DG Employment Progress programme. This allows us carry out research, peer reviews and studies through our Social Affairs Forum members and the working groups. You can read more on our dedicated website: www.inclusivecities.eu (please note: this website will be transfered to the main Eurocities one in April 2012).
Supported by the European Commission, the nine cities involved in our Cities for Active Inclusion network are working together to chart the opportunities and challenges to economic and social inclusion in different member states. National workshops and comparative research has focused on such issues as housing, employment and young people.

Our EU-funded MIXITIES project promotes the implementation of our Integrating Cities Charter, in which signatory cities commit to provide equal opportunities for all residents and promote the integration of migrants.

Some of the EUROCITIES Social Affairs Forum work is supported by the European Union Programme for Employment and Social Solidarity (2007-2013). This programme is managed by the Directorate General for employment, social affairs and equal opportunities of the European Commission. It was established to financially support the implementation of the objectives of the European Union in the employment and social affairs area, as set out in the Social Agenda, and thereby contribute to the achievement of the EUROPE 2020 goals in these fields.
