Are you interested to learn about what cities can do for social sustainability? Is your city already working to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals? Or perhaps you or your city are searching for inspiration from other cities in Europe? Then, join us for the Social Affairs Forum in Utrecht on 7-8 March.
The forum’s theme will be: ‘Making the city together: co-creating city strategies to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local level’. The focus of the Forum meeting will be on the role of cities in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030 at local level. Through a series of panel debates, workshops, site visits and speed-networking sessions, cities will gain a better understanding of what these global goals mean and how they can be integrated in their city strategies for sustainable urban development. The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss how cities can work together with the European Commission towards the implementation of SDGs in the EU in view of achieving inclusive and sustainable development in Europe.
Participants will discuss how to localise SDGs by putting in place participatory processes to involve all actors in the local communities so as to ensure ownership of the actions leading to reaching these ambitious goals. The event will take stock of best practices to co-create city strategies on SDGs and how to finance their implementation. We aim to inspire cities to better connect social challenges, such as poverty, health and well-being, to economic development and environmental challenges. The event will look at how SDGs can inspire local governments to work together with urban communities of citizens, businesses and civil society, on a sustainable future for all.
Some cities in Europe are already leading the way in localising the SDGs and can inspire others to follow. The event’s host city, Utrecht, is a ‘Global Goals City’ in the Netherlands, shaped through the concept of an inclusive city. The central feature of Utrecht’s urban development strategy is co-creation, known as ‘making the city together’. Co-creation gives ownership of local innovations with a global, sustainable impact. Utrecht will present its strategy and showcase several of its projects during the Forum meeting.
