The ‘EU cities for fair and ethical trade award’ is an initiative of the Directorate General for Trade launched as a commitment of its ‘Trade for all’ communication published in 2015. The award is part of EU’s effort to raise awareness about how EU trade patterns can affect the environment and livelihoods of communities in other countries, and the role that cities play in this. Cities as the platform for increasing the information flow about sustainable and ethical trade is the at the core of the award.

Applying for the award, cities will showcase their policies to raise awareness about fair and ethical trade at city level with non-EU countries. Applications will open in December for a period of 4 months; webinars will be organised during this period to support interested cities in submitting their application. The award-winning city will be promoted as a pioneer, increasing its visibility thanks to extensive media coverage and will gain future support from the International Trade Centre for a city-led development project. The award ceremony will take place in June 2018 in Brussels.
The official launch of the award will take place in Brussels, at the Committee of the Regions, on Thursday 7 December (12.30-14.30). To register (by 30 November):
