Fourteen EUROCITIES members were among the first signatories of the 'Mayors Adapt' initiative on 16 October.
EUROCITIES members Antwerp, Barcelona, Bologna, Bratislava, Burgas, Copenhagen, Ghent, Lisbon, Madrid, Munich, Murcia, Newcastle, Rotterdam, and San Sebastian were among the first signatories of 'Mayors Adapt', the new Covenant of Mayors initiative on climate adaptation, which launched on 16 October.
The initiative is about strenghtening Europe's resilience to the inevitable impacts of climate change. As centres of population and infrastructure, cities are particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events and other consequences of climate change. Mayors Adapt, a European Commission initiative, is therefore helping to engage cities in climate change adaptation.
The signature ceremony in Brussels on 16 October also marked the launch of a new 'Urban Adaptation Support Tool'. This will provide practical guidance and knowledge support to Mayors Adapt signatories and to any other interested cities, towns or stakeholders. The tool includes six sections on adaptation to help cities to: explore risks and vulnerabilities to current and future climate; identify and assess adaptation options; develop and implement a climate change adaptation strategy and/or action plan; and monitor the results.
