Cities show leadership on Roma inclusion

Our pilot project on Roma inclusion came to a close in December 2013

The pilot project East-West Cooperation on Cities for Roma Inclusion hosted its final event in Brussels on 12 December 2013. The project aimed to improve the integration of Roma people in Europe into mainstream society, giving them better access to services, education, employment and housing. The project was designed to improve local authorities' understanding and capacity to to deliver better services and equal treatment of Roma. The project is supported by EUROCITIES, the Open Society Foundations and the Bernard van Leer Foundation.

The session brought together over 70 participants form cities across Europe, as well as representatives from the European institutions and from Roma organisations. Participants exchanged knowledge, expertise and good practices on how best to implement concrete local actions to promote the social inclusion of Roma.

Over 20 politicians at the event concluded that in order to achieve real change, our work on Roma inclusion needs to be backed by firm political commitment.

The event marked the end of the pilot phase of the project. Our Roma inclusion taskforce will continue our work on this theme.
