Following a successful European Social Economy Regions (ESER) pilot in 2018, the European Commission is extending this initiative with a second edition in 2019. The initiative targets EU regions and cities and aims to raise awareness on social economy and build gradually a knowledge-based social economy community across Europe. Via this initiative, EU regions and cities have the opportunity to put together regional and local social economy stakeholders and discuss/brainstorm on existing societal challenges at regional and local level. At the same time cities can learn about EU initiatives, projects and supportive schemes for social economy and exchange views on this issue with a European Commission expert.
The 2018's ESER pilot attracted 32 EU regions and cities from 14 EU member states. During two concluding events in October in Bilbao (Global Social Economy Forum) and in Brussels (European Week of Regions and Cities), ideas and concrete proposals were collected towards co-creation of policies in the field of social economy from participating regions and cities.
In 2019, the initiative will be streamlined towards a targeted inter-regional collaboration.
