On 22 February 2018 the European Commission launched the annual contest for The European Capital of Innovation Award – also known as iCapital. That contest wants to reward the European cities which have better demonstrated their ability to take advantage of innovation to enanche the lives of their citizens. Cities will have until 21 June 2018 to complete and submit their application.
The iCapital Award is open to cities which have a population above 100,000 inhabitants (in countries where there are no such cities, the biggest city is eligible). Only cities from EU member states and countries associated to Horizon 2020 can apply to the contest.
An independent high-level jury will judge how cities put in practice innovative solutions to social challenges. These solutions must have been started the year prior to the opening of the contest. The judging criteria will be: the experimentation of innovative solutions; the engagement of citizens at all scopes of innovation; the expansion of the city's attractiveness; the empowerment of citizens with tangible and measurable results of innovation.
The iCapital contest will award €1 million to the city that will be named European Innovation Capital of the year to additionally improve its innovative actions. Moreover, the contest will reward the five runner-up cities, which will each receive €100.000.
