A more positive future for Europe starts with its citizens. As local leaders and members of EUROCITIES, we are committed to engaging our citizens in a dialogue about our future.

by Daniel Termont, president of EUROCITIES and mayor of Ghent

A more positive future for Europe starts with its citizens. As local leaders and members of EUROCITIES, we are committed to engaging our citizens in a dialogue about our future.

Today, citizens are taking collective action to address challenges they experience - sometimes together with local government, sometimes without, or even in opposition to city authorities. At a time when politics, both at national and European level, is failing to match people’s expectations, we are about to launch a process aimed at rebuilding and strengthening trust between citizens and public authorities.

In May 2018, we will be showcasing successful local initiatives that engage citizens, present ideas for new forms of democracy and map out a positive, common future.

‘Cities4Europe – Europe for citizens’ wants to inspire cities and other levels of government, including the EU institutions, to take up mechanisms and tools that more directly involve citizens in policy making, strengthening new forms of democracy across Europe.

Europe can learn from its cities and citizens. As city leaders, we can provide our expertise and the lessons we learned along the way. We are positive that together with our civil society we can succeed in creating a brighter future for Europe and its people.

We believe that this campaign will be very inspiring and contribute to a better future for Europe and its citizens.

Cities can make this happen. And so can you! Join us in May 2018, to build a better and citizen-focused Europe!
