Europe’s young people account for almost a fifth of its population. Thanks to their education and skills, they are Europe’s most important asset.

Young people today face many challenges. Across Europe, around one fifth of all young people are unemployed. As young people are amongst the hardest hit by the economic crisis, this figure is rising.
The Europe 2020 strategy recognises the importance of equipping young people with adequate skills and sets targets for reducing early school leaving and raising the tertiary education levels.
In many European cities, an increasing number of young people are leaving school without the necessary qualifications for getting a job. Some urban areas face high levels of youth unemployment, making the issue of youth policy all the more important if cities are to harness the potential of young people.
Many cities already have new policies in place for young people, including programmes for education, employment, health, housing, leisure and sport or culture.
Our work focuses on the many aspects that can affect the lives of young people.

Through our working group education, we look at how cities can tackle the challenge of early school leaving. Our network of Cities for Active Inclusion, and our working group on employment examine how cities can solve youth unemployment and ways of providing integrated support to young people entering the labour market.
