Mayors of major European cities have thrown their weight behind a new campaign ‘Cities4Europe – Europe for citizens’ which will showcase successful local initiatives that engage citizens, present ideas for new forms of democracy and map out a positive, common future for Europe.

Europe can learn a lot from its cities and citizens. By mobilising our network of over 140 of Europe's largest cities, that between them govern 130 million citizens across 39 countries, EUROCITIES wants to inspire cities and other levels of government, including the EU, to engage citizens in decision making.

A kick-off event on 3 May 2018 will involve all participating cities via a joint action. Our campaign will then come alive throughout the month in our member cities – with activities ranging from art exhibitions, to youth assemblies, from (social) media campaigns to public debates.

Cities are crucial in shaping the future of Europe, as EUROCITIES already demonstrated in the successful ‘Mayor’s summit on the future of Europe in March this year.

By looking at answers together with citizens, ‘Cities4Europe – Europe for citizens’ has the opportunity to co-create answers that will put people first and increase people’s trust in public authorities.

Answers to a more participative democracy that will be brought directly to political leaders at a second mayors’ summit in March 2019.

Daniël Termont, president of EUROCITIES and mayor of Ghent, said:

“A more positive future for Europe starts with its citizens. As local leaders and members of EUROCITIES, we are committed to engaging our citizens in a dialogue about our future. At a time when politics, both at national and European level, is failing to match people’s expectations, we are about to launch a process aimed at rebuilding and strengthening trust between citizens and public authorities.”

Join us in May 2018, to build a better and citizen-focused Europe!
