Our EUROCITIES working group on social inclusion through education will meet on 24-26 April 2019 in Barcelona.

Barcelona is a city described by the diversity and heterogeneity of its population. This diversity is clearly visible in the schools around the city. To welcome diversity and foster inclusion in schools and in the classroom, Barcelona has been innovating in terms of (pre-)school organisation, school leadership, training of teachers and educators, and the use of innovative methodologies and digital tools.

Barcelona's education policy has a strong focus on delivering equal opportunities for all children through quality and inclusive education. This approach is fully in line with principle 1 of the European Pillar of Social Rights providing that everyone has the right to quality and inclusive education, training and lifelong learning.

Over three days of site visits, presentations and workshops, participants will learn about Barcelona's strategy to promote inclusion and equity in education. Through field visits to preschools, primary schools and secondary schools, participants will have the chance to discuss with school leaders, teachers and educators to discover their good practices in:

  • innovative and friendly pre-school organisation
  • how to use digital tools in an innovative and efficient way with pedagogical goals
  • how to support projects in and with schools to reduce inequalities
  • how to promote positive school leadership adapted to a territorial context (how to work together with various stakeholders in the area)

The study visit will follow the 'critical friend review' methodology whereby the visiting cities do not only learn from the good practices showcased, but also provide suggestions and recommendations to Barcelona on how to further improve its education policy and practices to get ever closer to achieving equity and inclusion through education.

You can find attached the agenda, the site visit descriptions and all the working documents for the meeting. Moreover, a list of recommended hotels nearby the two venues of the meeting is also available below.
